  • Abstract

    Leading practitioners in the field of rail megaprojects discuss whether rail projects really are a “nightmare” to deliver.

    In Britain alone, the rail industry facilitates travel for around 1.7 billion passengers every single year. Behind these journeys lie highly complex projects, which have been labelled a nightmare by both industry practitioners and experts alike. As high-profile rail projects such as Crossrail and HS2 continue to progress towards key milestones, the question of how we can achieve successful delivery has become extremely pertinent. This seminar brings together leading experts in rail project delivery from around the world to discuss the question of whether rail projects are a nightmare to deliver and how we can achieve successful delivery. Each speaker brings unique insights into the complexity of rail megaprojects, and how these projects will play an integral part in meeting sustainability goals within the next decade.

    Mark Wild OBE - Crossrail Ltd

    Mark Wild has more than 35 years of experience leading complex and critical infrastructure. An Engineer with Hons Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering and Masters in Business Administration.

    Mark started his career in the electricity sector, but the majority of his experience has been in transportation. He has had a long career in operating and building major transportation infrastructure. Mark is the former Managing Director of Westinghouse Signals and was the CEO of Public Transport Victoria. Mark is also former Managing Director of London Underground and the former CEO of Crossrail, Europe’s largest infrastructure programme.

    Mark took up the role of CEO for SGN, one of the UK’s largest gas distribution networks in August last year.

    Mark is a Chartered Electrical Engineer and Member of the Institute of Engineering and Technology and received an OBE in the 2023 New Year Honours.
